Mati is a nine-year-old tribal girl growing up on the edge of a coal-mining belt. Fascinated by excavator machines, she carries a toy one everywhere and even dreams of operating one.

During a day of work on their small agricultural plot, an argument breaks out between Mati’s father and her grandmother when he casually tells Mati that women cannot own land. Defying him, the grandmother gifts Mati a small piece
of land. For Mati, the land becomes more than a possession—it becomes a responsibility. She tends to it with care, and soon fragile saplings begin to grow.

On her way home from school one afternoon, Mati hears a public
announcement calling on villagers to sell their land for the expansion of the
nearby coal mines. Her grandmother, along with other villagers, joins a protest against the land acquisition. Mati takes part too, perched on her father’s shoulders, watching closely.

As the protest intensifies, Mati witnesses the arrival of excavator machines and the ruthless destruction they unleash. The machines she once admired now appear monstrous. Her childhood fascination turns into nightmare.
